Culver City Girls and James Jordan Boys Win Championship in Undefeated Season
FIYA soccer came to a close with two wonderful championship games in the Division 1 championship on Thursday afternoon. The girls championship included Westside league rivals Century Community Charter School and Culver City Middle School. While it was a defensive battle for the first 25 minutes, the second half opened up to several scoring opportunities. Both teams had multiple scoring chances in the second half. However, only Culver City was able to get the best of the opportunities and Culver City girls prevailed 2-0. This was the Panthers third straight Division 1 championship for the girls as they completed another perfect season. Meanwhile, Culver City boys, while undefeated as well, was searching for its first soccer championship against the Valley league champion James Jordan who was also undefeated. The boys championship was very different from the girls. In a fast paced offensive based game, James Jordan scored first but Culver City struck back to tie it. Then another display of great footwork and ball control allowed James Jordan to score again and lead 2 - 1 at halftime. In the second half, James Jordan continued where it left off and scored again. With their backs to the wall, Culver City rose to the challenge and scored the next two goals to tie it 3 - 3 and the capacity crowd was thrilled with the high quality of soccer skills and speed on display.. The Phoenix rose one more time with another goal with a few minutes left in the game and James Jordan earned their first FIYA chamipionship with a 4 - 3 victory. Congratulations to all involved in a wonderful championship day.
