FIYA ESPORTS

FIYA eSports - Starting Fall 2020 Season!

Starting in the 2020-2021 school year, FIYA will offer eSports, open for participation to any and all elementary and middle schools.  For the unfamiliar, eSports is short for electronic sports and over the last decade the sport of competitive video game playing has exploded.  Many high schools offer eSports athletic teams and colleges now offer scholarships to attract the best eSports athletes to their campus.  In addition, there are professional opportunities for such gamers as well as career opportunities in the eSports world for the non-gamers who have an interest in this industry.

Consequently, FIYA is excited to offer eSports for our student-athletes to help initiate the journey into this industry.  Because eSports can provide another venue for our student-athletes to participate in a team environment, we will structure our eSports offerings so that it accentuates the team concept and will assist in instructing and learning the values of working as a team.  Connecting more students to be a part of their school community fulfills our mission of strengthening schools through sports.

While eSports can be played virtually anywhere, in the computer lab on campus or at-home, only requiring a computer or gaming console to participate, we hope that FIYA school teams will be organized like any other traditional sport - the team will have practices, participate as a group in the games, have team uniforms, hold its players accountable to academic/behavioral standards, etc.

To help facilitate a FIYA eSports community, FIYA has set up a private Discord server. Discord is a communication forum primarily used for eSports. FIYA has created its own discord server to promote community and togetherness. Here players can talk or message other members in the FIYA eSports community. FIYA encourages schools to create their own discord account and join the FIYA eSports private Discord server.

If you misesd our 9/17 Zoom Coaches Meeting, the video recording is now posted below. For all other eSports related inquiries, please don't hesitate to email us at info@onfiya.org!

MORE ON FIYA ESPORTS

 WHAT ARE ESPORTS?

To learn more about the benefits and background of eSports, how you can start a program at your school and help get your students involved, we will be posting additional resources and educational tools shortly! Return to this page for more.

 BASIC GUIDELINES ABOUT FIYA ESPORTS

1.  Like any traditional school sports team, you need an adult coach.  Coaches should participate in NAYS online coaching certification (see information on our registration page).  Note:  NAYS does not have an online sport specific course in eSports, so eSports coaches should take the Coaching Youth sports online training and any sport-specific training course of desire (even though there is no a course related to eSports).

2.  Familiarize yourself with FIYA's eSports general rules as well as title specific rules.

3.  Set up a school Twitch account on Twitch.TV.  The USER name should be the school name and this USER name is needed when you register any eSports team in FIYA.  The Twitch account is especially important since the start of FIYA eSports will occur while schools are still using distant learning.

4.  Work with your school's administration and IT support to discuss the intrinsic value that a school eSports team will have.  Also explore the school's equipment and network connectivity capacity.  FIYA highly recommends that eSports events (practices, games) occur on the school campus.  However, in light of schools' distant learning model during the pandemic, schools can still offer eSports teams.  Nevertheless, it is important that coaches are present for games and practices which is why Twitch accounts are required.

5.  Host tryouts for your school's eSports team.  Have weekly practices.  Select captains and team roles.

6.  Register for FIYA eSports Leagues (Rocket League, Fortnite & Overwatch) and/or FIYA eSports Tournaments (NFL Madden, NBA 2K and Chess).  Go to our Registration page.

7.  All coaches and players should create a Discord account and join FIYA's Discord server in order to promote a FIYA eSports community. A link to join will be provided in the confirmation email when you register.

8.  All coaches and players in eSports should adhere to FIYA's Sportsmanship Pledge.  This includes without limitation use of appropriate communication with all parties involved in FIYA eSports including game handles.  FIYA eSports games should be played with the highest level of respect and integrity in all aspects.  No eSports game should be resigned by any player/team prior to its completion.

 WHY ESPORTS?

ESports has continued its evolution into today's mainstream culture, exponentially during COVID-19 social restrictions and quarantine protocols, and there's plenty of data and statistics that support its movement. Similar to traditional sports, eSports also provide a plethora of benefits to students in more ways than just if they become a professional gamer.

At this time while our youth are being socially limited and may not get the same in-person school experience this year, we believe eSports could help fill that void and create an experience for students to engage with their school and one another outside of the classroom, and not to mention - even from home.

To learn more about the benefits of eSports and how it could impact your school and participating students, please check back to this page for additional resources that will be posted shortly!

WANT TO GET INVOLVED IN OUR PROGRAM?

Because our traditional fall seasons and programs will look different due to COVID19 restrictions, we're hoping to keep our schools and students engaged by providing the best possible experience with eSports and other virtual competitions!  In order to make that come to life, and to help get more schools and students involved, there are plenty of opportunities to offer your support and contribute to FIYA eSports!

1. SPONSOR OR DONATE TO FIYA ESPORTS

If you are interested in contributing to our upcoming virtual programs so we can create awesome and engaging experiences for our students to still participate in youth sports, all donations are greatly appreciated! Click here for FIYA's donation page. If you are a company or organization who would like to learn more about our various sponsorship opportunities and material needs with eSports, we'd love to hear from you! For all interests or inquiries, please email us at info@onfiya.org

2. VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME AND EXPERTISE TO EDUCATE OUR COMMUNITY

If you are a professional from the gaming or tech industries or have experience with eSports and would like to get involved with our program, we'd also love your support! Help our schools prepare their teams and coaches for the season, educate our community on how to play, and anything in between that can contribute to an overall better experience for our participants.  If interested, please email us at info@onfiya.org

3. COACH A TEAM IN NEED

If you have first-hand experience with eSports and are interested in coaching a team from one of our schools, please reach out! Coaches will be critical to FIYA eSports because coaches are required for every team that participates in our leagues or tournaments. With this being a completely new program in our organization and more than likely also new for our participating schools, many may have difficulty finding a coach to help guide their teams.  If interested in making eSports possible for one of these schools, please email us at info@onfiya.org

 NEW TO ESPORTS?

Don't worry, FIYA is too! If you have any questions or issues along the way, do not hesitate to reach out to us at info@onfiya.org. We want to make it possible for as many of our schools and students to participate in our virtual offerings while our otherwise traditional sports are put on hold for the time being. Now, more than ever, engaging and collaborative activities couldn't be more relevant and critical to our youth while they are being sidelined from their previous programs and opportunities. So if FIYA can be of any assistance in helping your students play in our eSports leagues and/or tournaments, let us know what we can do to help!

In the meantime, we're doing our best assist our schools and school leaders by providing as many tools and resources that'll help jump start their eSports programs. From video tutorials, to helpful articles, you can find a plethora of useful information with the links to the right and even more will be posted shortly.
