The 2014 D-1 Soccer Finals were held Monday on the beautiful field at Playa Vista Park. In the girls’ game, two time defending champions New West took on Culver City, who were undefeated coming into the game in their inaugural season of FIYA Soccer. New West got on the board first, with a goal reminiscent of their lone score in their semi-final victory– a long, arcing shot from nearly midfield that found the back of the net. The Panthers would not go down easily though, battling back to tie the game and force overtime. After the five minute extra period the teams were still knotted at 1, leading to penalty kicks where Culver City prevailed to take their first FIYA Soccer championship.
The boys had a lot to live up to following such an exciting game but they did not disappoint. Inglewood rivals Crozier and Monroe took the pitch with Monroe looking to avenge a regular season loss to undefeated Crozier. They got off to strong start scoring first, but Crozier would not go down easily and showed why they finished in first place by tying the score. In the closing minutes it looked as if the boys would need extra time to decide the winner as the girls did, but Monroe had other ideas. Knowing a postgame meal at In-N-Out awaited them if they could pull off the win, they scored late and hung on for the victory. It is their second consecutive FIYA Soccer title.
